Posted by Adam Belanger at Oct 23, 2016 12:05PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Camrose Trojans lost to the Wetaskiwin Sabres Friday night by a score of 17 – 0. The Sabres, led by a powerful rushing attack racked up 296 yards of offence to the Trojans 165 yards. Wetaskiwin had the edge but the Trojans had two big goal line stops to keep the Sabres within reach. The Trojan offence never got established and stalled on a couple of drives that kept points off the board. Nick Ioanidis led the way with 75 yards rushing but the team was unable to capitalize. Griffon Lorenz completed 3 of 6 passes but the Sabres intercepted a pass intended for Matt Harland in the endzone which took away a scoring opportunity for the Trojans. The Sabres scored twice with one 2 point conversion and the Trojans were forced to give up a safety. The defence was led by Austin Thompson who had 14 tackles on the night. Russell Oshanyk had 8.

Not all is lost for the Trojans as the Drayton Valley Warriors defeated the Rocky Mountain House Rebels on Friday. The Rebels, Warriors, and Trojans all end the regular season with 2 wins. We beat Drayton Valley, Rocky Mountain House beat us and Drayton Valley beat Rocky Mountain House. The tie was broken by the points differential in each of the three games. The Trojans earned 4th spot with Drayton Valley 5th and Rocky Mountain House ending up 6th.

Trojans win over Ponoka Broncs 28-14

Posted by Adam Belanger at Oct 16, 2016 5:32PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The snow has been good to the Trojans in October as they defeated the Ponoka Broncs 28-14 on Thursday October 13. This brings the Trojans record to 2 – 3 and the final week of the regular season coming up. The Trojans came out strong in the first quarter and Nick Ioanidis found the endzone early and with Terryll Shermans convert, the Trojans were up 7 – 0. Griffon Lorenz dropped back to pass 4 minutes later but the Broncs had good coverage so he took off for a 58 yard touchdown run. Sherman added the convert and the Trojans were up 14 – 0. Sherman missed a long field goal late in the first quarter and the Broncs came back with a sustained drive but the Trojan defence stiffened at the end keeping the Broncs off the scoreboard. It was back and forth in the middle of the field late portions of the 2nd quarter until Nick Ioanidis broke free on a 52 yard touchdown run late in the second quarter. Sherman added his third convert of the night. The third quarter remained scoreless but Ioanidis found the endzone for his third touchdown of the night early in the fourth to put the Trojans ahead 28 – 0 with Sherman’s convert. The Trojans were in command of the game late in the fourth when Terryll Sherman, in at quarterback, was intercepted on a great break on the ball and the Bronc defender ran it in for their first touchdown of the night with 1:47 left in the game. Camrose fumbled the ball on their next offensive play and Ponoka punched in their second touchdown a few plays later. The Trojans finished the game with their best rushing performance of the year with a total of 382 yards on the ground. The Offensive line deserves much of the credit who did a great job opening holes for our running backs. First year player Jonny Either stepped in at center early in the third quarter and held up the line very well in his first action at the center of the line. Nick Ioanidis was busy and had an excellent night with 213 yards amassed on 20 carries and 3 touchdowns. Griffon Lorenz added 95 yards on 6 carries and a touchdown. The Defence strung out a fast Broncs rushing attack holding them to 103 yards on the ground and only 13 yards passing on 3 completions. First year player Jason “Smokey” Bennett stepped up on the corner blanketing the Broncs receivers.

The much improved Trojan team is coming together at the right time. Next up for the Trojans is the Wetaskiwin Sabres in the final week of the regular season. The Sabres with 2 wins and the Trojans, also with 2 wins will square off in the annual Highway 13 Cup. This game, not only determines who holds the trophy in the schools hallowed halls for the next year, but also who ends up in fourth place and A side of playoffs. Game time is 7:30 on Friday October 21 at the Trojans home field. There is no better way to end the regular season with the Highway 13 Cup determining the playoff picture late in October. Go Trojans!
